The Evolution of Soilless Systems towards Ecological Sustainability in the Perspective of a Circular Economy. Is It Really the Opposite of Organic Agriculture?

Soilless cultivation systems were primarily developed in response to the excessive spread of soil pathogens; however, they also allow an optimal control plant grow, high productivity and product quality as well very efficiency water fertilizer use. At same time, consumers remain critical towards soilless-cultivated vegetables, mainly due perception these techniques unnatural, resulting from artificial growth consequently characterized by low quality. This mini review analyzes evolutionary process soilless within a vision agriculture that supports environmental sustainability central theme discussion. Current knowledge suggests that, although apparently opposite, organic high-tech have several common or converging points view sustainable use resources on planet. As consequence, new policies should be oriented toward reduction “pressure” introducing certification impact, which, together with adequate certification, related not only aspect but quality, can reduce opposition two systems.
